History of Delaware Colony
In the year of 1609, before the amazing colony of Delaware was founded, an explorer named Henry Hudson discovered our incredibly beautiful river and bay. Then 29 years after Henry Hudson's discovery, Peter Minuit, (who was hired by the Swedes) came to Delaware to build a settlement on the land. He was hired to build the New Sweden Company in the New World so that the Swedes could make more money someplace else. A year later, the first African man, (Black Anthony) was brought to the colony from the Caribbean.
Life was going pretty good for 16 years, then the Dutch came and defeated the Swedes ending the New Sweden Company. After that Delaware was under control of the Dutch and was known as New Netherland. The Delaware colony was doing amazing and was thriving and proving that they could handle life on their own for about 121 years. In the year of 1776 all of the thirteen colonies joined together against Great Britain. July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was made. On a very special date, December 7, 1787, Delaware becomes the first colony to become a state, (be admitted to the union.) Delaware’s history is amazingly interesting, so many things have gone on in a little over 100 years. My last question is why haven’t you thought about moving here before? If you do you will not regret it afterward!
